Welcome to Dave the Diver! This intriguing little game blends a variety of different genres together, but for now we need to get the basics nailed down. A cinematic opens the game, showing Dave relaxing on the beach without a care in the world. That is, until he receives a call from Cobra.

Dave heads off to meet Cobra, where the pair make for Blue Hole. Approach the end of the boat, making note of the directional buttons on PC (W,A,S,D) and hold Spacebar to dive down into the water.

Here, you’ll be introduced to the basic controls, including the aforementioned directional buttons. Swim toward the marker in front of you. To swim faster, hold down the left shift button while moving in that direction. Do note though that it does consume more oxygen.

Once you’ve reached the marker, you’re given another tutorial for using the Dive Knife. Left clicking will allow Dave to attack. You’ll now need to use this move on 3 fish.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll also learn the basics of striking with your harpoon. Holding the right mouse button down, move the cursor up and down to your chosen direction and then left click to release.

You only need to catch 3 to progress, and once you’re back on the boat, it leads into the next part of our tutorial – the Sushi Bar. It doesn’t matter whether you choose to accept or decline, we’re going there anyway. Allon-sy!

Once you’ve collected the chosen fish, you’re introduced to Bancho at the Sushi restaurant. He’s got a few jobs for us, including catching 7 fish and making 100 gold to repair the Sushi bar.

The latter will come naturally over time so for now, dive back down and catch 7 different fish. Although you only need to capture 7 to progress the game forward, it’s a good idea to max out your storage here and capture as many fish as you can carry, as it’ll help out during the later stages of this.

Dave the Diver also doubles up as a Time Management sim, with two available dives during the day, and the Sushi Bar restaurant sim during the evening. With that in mind, capturing as many fish as possible is paramount here to maximize your dive time.

If you carry too much, you’ll want to open your inventory by hitting the ESC key and then scrolling down to any items you want to discard. This is much more relevant to deeper dives during latter stages of the game. Here though, catch as much as you like, even if you end up over-encumbered with a padlock above your head.

Once you make it to the surface, you’ll obtain a Dive Log, which includes information about each dive, including time spent underwater, all the different resources you’ve collected and the maximum depth you obtained. Next, transfer the fish to your fish tank by pressing Spacebar. Next, head to the Sushi bar.

After a tutorial about working at the Sushi Bar, including holding S to pour Green Tea, a cutscene ensues, showing a rather menacing red squid tentacle grabbing a delivery boat and dragging it to the depths.

The next day you’ll be introduced to Ellie, a biologist in the area. She’s not exactly the warmest person in the area but she has a big mission for you to conduct. She wants you to collect 2 Agar and 2 Red Starfish.

Proceed down to a depth of 12.2m and start moving toward the center of the Blue Hole. Right next to a blue Oxygen barrel, you’ll find your objective. Objectives like this are always marked with a blue diamond above them, but for this straightforward mission, approach and press Spacebar to pick up the red Starfish. As for Agar, hit it with your knife or chosen weapon (left click) and collect the remains.

Once you’ve grabbed Ellie’s chosen items, take your time to explore as best you can and collect as many fish as possible. If you haven’t managed it on the day before, our goal here is still to make 100 Gold. Once you’ve done that, make your way back to the surface. Once you’ve collected all your gold, you’re introduced to Duff.

Duff won’t help until you’ve gathered some resources in the water. You need to look for Rope and Scrap Iron, and collect 1 of each. These items are quite straightforward in truth, and are usually scattered on the seabed on various platforms.

Pick them up, return to the surface, and Duff will create a Basic Underwater Rifle, your first weapon. There’s also a new Weapon Shop app added to your Smartphone. This will let you craft and upgrade weapons. Press Craft on the Rifle.

Head back to the bar, complete the Sushi Bar serving for the evening, and then head back on the boat again. In doing so, Dr Bacon will come and meet you. He’s got a crazy story about Sea People to share.

As a reward for hearing him out, he’ll give you a free gear upgrade. This will double the depth you can travel to 80m. Do be aware that the further you travel down, the more dangerous creatures may be lurking in the depths!

Next, he’ll add a new app on your Smartphone (next to the Weapon Store) called iDiver where you can upgrade your gear for gold. Once you’ve finished, exit out and you’ll have wrapped up the prologue.
