When Michael Simmons throws clay on the potter’s wheel, to make a functional bowl, he said he often thinks about how it will be used, especially if it’s for food.

“I think about what type of food I might serve in it, and how it will present in the handmade piece,” Simmons said. “If I’m making something for soup it might be deep and tall, with a little weight to it. Or, for something like tea, I might make a thinner, lighter bowl, designed for people to whisk and make their own matcha (a type of green tea),” Simmons said. “I try to see my work as a collection of moments.”

What: For 15 years, the fundraiser Empty Bowls Greenwood has helped support the all-volunteer Greenwood Soup Kitchen. It also raises awareness of hunger in the community. Ticket sales for Empty Bowls start Sept. 5, while supplies last.

Buy tickets: Call Norm Fawcett at 864-227-3421. $25 per adult. $15 children ages 12 and younger.

When: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. or 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, for take-out meals only. And, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. or 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, for dine-in only.

About Greenwood Soup Kitchen, (GSK): A nonprofit meal center, at 929 Phoenix St. Greenwood, located in the United Center for Community Care, GSK feeds more than 100 people a day. Lunch is served 11 a.m. to noon, six days a week, with volunteers from Immanuel Lutheran Church providing meals Sundays. Most days Greenwood Soup Kitchen operates, a hot meal is served. The hungry eat, free of charge.
